Chiropractic Myths & Facts – #1 What is a Chiropractor?

❌Chiropractors only treat spinal disorders.

✅Chiropractors treat any mechanical disorder related to the musculoskeletal system.

đŸ‘đŸ»Chiropractors treat any mechanical disorder related to the musculoskeletal system.

Chiropractors are patient-centered, hands-on, non-invasive health care professions that treat conditions related to your spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system. This includes any repetitive stress on your joints, sprain or strains, extremities tendinopathy, and even TMJ dysfunction (jaw pain). Chiropractors use the best available evidence and clinical expertise to diagnose issues that affect your body’s movement. They treat them without medication or surgery and prevent them from returning. Chiropractic care can improve patient’s quality of life and alleviate symptoms like mechanical low back or neck pain, joint stiffness or dysfunction, muscle trigger points, numbness and tingling from pinched nerves, etc.

❌Chiropractors only do spinal manipulation.

✅Spinal manipulation is only one of the many techniques that chiropractors use.

đŸ‘đŸ»Spinal manipulation is only one of the many techniques that chiropractors use.

Chiropractor in Latin means “done by hand”, or hands-on practitioner. Chiropractors are known for their spinal manipulation technique (SMT), which is a technique that applies to the restricted joints to release joint pressure and increase mobility. However, SMT is just one of the many techniques that chiropractors will use. Depending on the patient’s preferences and condition, the chiropractor may or may not perform SMT on that patient, and the chiropractor may use soft tissue therapy (similar to massage but on specific muscle), joint mobilization (moving the joints around), patient education, exercise prescription, modalities (heat, electrotherapy, ultrasound, etc), and acupuncture as part of their treatment plan.

Hope you get to know more about what chiropractor is and does in this section. In the next section, we will talk more about what is spinal manipulation therapy, and if it is safe and effective. Stay tuned!!
