What is the Proper Form for Lifting Heavy Objects?

Writer's picture: cesphysiorehabcesphysiorehab

Now that we are in Spring, we may want to do some outdoor gardening or cleaning around the house.

You may strain your lower back from carrying heavy bags of soil or from lifting a bucket of water while mopping. Today we will talk about the proper form for lifting heavy objects to avoid hurting yourself.

When preparing to lift an object, you should keep a wide base for support; stand shoulder-width apart, with one foot slightly ahead of the other.

When picking up the object, squat down while bending at the hips and knees. If you are unable to squat, kneel with one knee on the ground and bend at a right angle to pick up the object.

Maintain a good posture while lifting the object up slowly by looking ahead and straightening your hips and knees. Remember to keep your back straight, chest out and shoulders back.

Hold the object as close to your body as possible, preferably at the level of your belly button and keep your shoulders in line with your hips as you move. It is never a good idea to lift a heavy object above shoulder level.

When you set the object down, squat with your knees and hips and avoid turning or twisting your body.

And always remember to not overwork yourself and that it is okay to ask for a helping hand.
